Exceptional Japanese cuisine in the heart of Montmartre, the Guilo-Guilo is held by Kyoto chef Eiichi Edakuni. This is contemporary Japanes cooking, a real awakening.
Unique menu composed of little dishes prepared on the spot by a team of chefs in a relaxed and intimate atmosphere. It’s on my list to do, but I’ll need to make a reservation far ahead. The menu changes every month, reasonable prices make this culinary experience accessible to all.
This Japanese restaurant is off the beaten track on a quiet little side street in the funky Abbesses neighborhood and a sure thing for a fabulous meal.

In the 19th century places where workers could buy a cheap but healthy soup to eat with their bread, were known as a “bouillon”. In Paris there existed many. Unfortunately, a lot of them disapeared. Some became ordinary cafés, sometimes a nice brasserie, some still exist ( Bouillon Chartier) or in case of Thoumieux were revamped and became a nice restaurant.
The chef Jean-François Piegé was trained by Alain Ducasse, gave the restaurant of Hôtel Le Crillon – Les Ambassadeurs 2 Michelin stars, but preferred to start his own restaurant. He did work together with Thierry Costes , bought Thoumieux, revamped it and it became a success story. Classic French cuisine with a modern twist, good value for money.

This is a family business with a mission : serving their clients a good, correct and healthy product with respect of the gastronomic authenticity.
“Probably the best beef that I have had in Europe. The claim is that they grow their own beef. I would have to believe that. Great cuts well prepared. Great wine list, Good service. If you like beef go here, do make a reservation they seem to be always busy.” This is one of the positive comments on Tripadvisor about this restaurant.
In a local magazine they did mention the restaurant as a great brasserie for meat lovers. And great meat it is. We went there on a saturday evening around 18.30h without reservation. They were very friendly, gave us a small table at the window. The whole evening we got great food. The starter “joue the boeuf confit” was very tasty. The Aubrac “filet de boeuf / rib-eye” we were served was top notch ( can be compared with the Argentinian beef ). It was so good we didn’t order a dessert out of fear to loose the taste of it.
The place downstairs is a bit noisy and quite warm. I read that they have a place upstairs for more elegant dining.

The name and fame of this place is well known. Maybe it’s the fame that became to much for them.
We were invited one evening at “Au chien qui fume”. At first we were offered a kirr. When my husband did ask for water, the waiter said that the aperitif was kirr…so he didn’t bring any water !?
Our meal did lack inspiration, to say the least. And the waiter, well he did his job.
Maybe they had a bad day, but to be honest I think they’re so sure of themselves that they serve everything. For us “Au chien qui fume” is a no go place.
